Maggie Salutes… Laura Hamilton Laura Hamilton was born and grew up on Caroline County. After high school she attended Goldey College in Wilmington. Laura met and married her husband during her four years working of DuPont in Wilmington. He was then transferred to Salisbury. They have six children, two boys and four girls. Laura retired after working twenty-five years at Sears, first in the service department and then in custom draperies. Busy with working and raising six children there wasn’t much time for leisure activities. Laura liked to knit and croquet items such as sweaters, doilies, and tablecloths and enjoys reading. Gardening was also an activity. Laura’s husband bowled as a hobby and she traveled with him to some of the bowling tournaments. After Laura’s husband passed away, she decided to stay in the area because she has such good friends and neighbors. She was concerned about caring for the acre of land on which her home sits but has a very kind neighbor who has taken over mowing it for the last twenty-five years. She could not continue in the house if it weren’t for her neighbor. She began volunteering with the American Legion by assisting with the canteen at Deers Head one evening a week as well as other duties. After Laura retired she really became involved with volunteering. Laura was honored this year by the Wicomico County Commission for Women being such an outstanding contributor to our community. Laura’s favorite part of being involved with Deers Head is being with the people; the patients, the other volunteers, and the staff. Everyone gets along so well that it is fun to be a part. Everyone works as a team, everyone is congenial. Laura likes to be involved with activities that make money for whatever organization to which she is contributing her time. Currently, she volunteers at the Deers Head Hospital Center, the American Legion, and Dove Point. It is her work with Deers Head Hospital Center that we will focus on in this issue. Deers Head Hospital Center provides specialized services for those in need of complex medical management, comprehensive rehabilitation, long-term care and/or dialysis to improve the quality of life for their patients and their families. Deers Head Hospital Center is a state operated institution and gives the patients/residents the basics. The volunteers provide the extras to enhance the day-to-day life of their patients/residents by being involved with canteen services, library services, feeding patients, sewing room activities, physical therapy escorts, activity therapy helpers, yard sales, mail delivery, kidney dialysis, office help, shopping, and much more.
