The Power of Getting Personal
By Glenn Silbert of GS Computers Plus, LLC
Letter writing
is an art. You don’t just string a lot of business-to-business
marketing jargon together with a “Dear” in front of it to
make it a letter. A sales letter is a personal communication that must
quickly capture the reader’s attention in the first line and bring
them to the compelling conclusion, I’ve just got to do this/have
this … now! It has been estimated through surveys that you can
expect a 25 percent response from a personal note.
Why it works
Let’s look at the composition of a good note:
Paragraph 1: Begin with a personal statement, “I saw your …,
and I just wanted to drop you a note/personal invitation.” It’s
flattering and intriguing and acknowledges the reader as a colleague.
Paragraph 2: “Being a … myself” establishes a peer
relationship. The rest of the paragraph focuses on the “pain point”
in the industry and offers a solution, “I know the problems of...”

Paragraph 3: Establish credibility.
Paragraph 4: Create a call to action, without sounding like a typical
letter or e-mail offer. The last sentence should flatter the reader
in a congenial, believable way. For example, “I also think you
would be a great addition to the group.” The next time you sit
down to write a letter or e-mail, get personal. Think of an actual person
who meets your “best customer profile,” then jot him a note.
You’ll be surprised at the difference it makes. And you’ll
probably get a much better response.
