"Good Neighbors on Delmarva ... Making a Splash!!!"
By Lisa Spicer

There is nothing better during these dog days of summer than a refreshing dip in the pool. That is exactly where you will find one of our Good Neighbors on Delmarva.
Sean McGuinn is a familiar sight on the swim circuit, even if you don’t recognize him by that name.

“There were about six Seans in my dorm at Salisbury University, so I somehow went from Sean McGuinn to Quinn, and it stuck!”

If you don’t recognize Quinn or his name, you can’t miss the noise he makes! He cheers louder and claps longer than anyone else for his Canal Woods Swim Team in Salisbury. This is the second year he and Lindsey Summers have coached the summer team.
“We are like good cop, bad cop. Lindsey is a little more serious, I like to goof around.”
Twenty-four year old Quinn is also Assistant Coach for the Salisbury University swim team.

“I grew up in a pool. I was on a summer swim team in Columbia, Maryland; I did year round swimming and now coaching. I love the sport. I love teaching kids how to swim.”
Quinn gets credit for teaching a lot of area children how to swim. They flock to his side for a fun filled session and don’t even realize they are learning something that may one day save their lives here on Delmarva.

“Kids are amazing when it comes to swimming. The more they get in the water, the more comfortable they are. If it’s fun they will want to spend more time in the water.”

Swimming is only one of the things Quinn takes on. He also can be found canoeing, biking, hiking and mountain climbing. He even graduated with honors from Salisbury University with a degree in physical outdoor education. If it’s outdoors, Quinn is into it. That’s why it may be surprising to know that a guy who is so physically active has a body that can sometimes let him down. Asthma makes it tough to endure heat, humidity and chlorine and a heart condition can suddenly hit him head on.

“When I have bad days you can tell. They don’t happen often, but when they do I am done. It’s been a difficult thing, because I am such an active person.”

Quinn fights back every step of the way. “I wake up every morning and I’m like, alright, what’s going to happen today. So I am all about learning to do things.” He is also all about taking his entire swim team under his wing, encouraging them to face down their fears, in the pool and in life.

“Schools these days are so hard on kids, especially with self-esteem and bullying. It’s more like a swim/life lesson. I try to show them that they can be happy with who they are and not let anyone take anything away from them. Who cares what other people think about you as long as you are happy with yourself. If they can see me acting like a goof ball and having a good time they get the idea that they can have fun and not worry about what others think.”
Quinn isn’t afraid to show his enthusiasm for life and his love for his family.

“My parents and two brothers are all very close. I think my mother is one of the greatest people I have ever met.” His openness and love of life make Quinn one of our Good Neighbors on Delmarva.
