Something Huge
At A Small School
By Lisa Spicer
Something
huge is happening at a small school on Delmarva. Steel beams are going
on at Salisbury Christian School that will soon become the walls and
roof of a four million plus dollar facility. The new 60 thousand square
foot building will include a gymnasium, modern classrooms, state-of-the-art
science and computer labs, and auditorium and much more.
There are currently over 450 students attending the pre-k through twelfth-grade
school. Fifth graders regularly advance to the middle school at 1.8
grade levels above national level. Also, 89% of the school’s graduating
seniors go on to college. Principals Jim Fox and Paul Vinroot say that
when your expectations are high students will try to reach that level.
Family involvement serves to significantly raise the student’s
achievement levels as well.
So
how is one small school accomplishing a major construction project?
It doesn’t do it alone. Just as the academic program is enriched
by family involvement, similarly businesses, churches and families from
across the lower Eastern Shore are helping to build by donating gifts
of materials, labor and cash. Jeff Downes has four children attending
S.C.S. “I have never regretter a single day our decision to send
our children to Salisbury Christian School.”
Today
Jeff is working to make sure that even more children can one day enroll
at SCS. He is heading up the construction project that will combine
the two campuses together at one site. “We call it the Nehemiah
Project because it is patterned after a project in the Bible’s
Old Testament where the prophet Nehemiah rallied his community to rebuild
the walls around the city of Jerusalem. Similarly, this community is
being drawn together, including students, teachers, parents and grandparents,
as well as churches and businesses to provide gifts of materials, labor
and cash to build these walls around the kids at SCS.”
Salisbury Christian School is currently planning one of its biggest
fundraisers to date. The annual Valentine’s Day Gala is set for
February 1,2003 at Dove Pointe in Salisbury. In addition to fun, food
and fellowship, a silent and live auction will include everything from
Major League Sports tickets to weekend vacations and works by local
artists.
