"Plastic Surgery and Men"
By Robert J. Davis, MD

While most of the focus of my specialty and the procedures we perform are directed toward women, last year 13% of all plastic surgery procedures were performed on men. Recent trends show that men are not only interested in the shape of their bodies, but also the appearance of their faces.

The top three male cosmetic surgical procedures of 2003 were:
Nose Reshaping - The formal name for this procedure is rhinoplasty. For the nose that is too long or wide for the face or has a hump that is too prominent, an operation is designed to correct this deformity in order to make the nose look in proportion to the rest of the face.

Liposuction - The most common complaint I hear is from the fellow who says he works out in the gym and diets but still can.t get rid of his love handles or neck fat. Liposuction works best for those areas of the body unresponsive to diet and exercise. This operation is done on an outpatient basis, and, depending on your job, you might be able to return to work in a few days and be back in the gym in four to six weeks.

Eyelid Surgery - Men want to look alert and competitive for their jobs and careers and the eyes are the main focal point of the face. Removing the extra skin from the upper eyelids, eliminating the baggy skin from the lower eyelid or slightly elevating the droopy eyebrow can give the face a brightness and alertness that is sometimes lost with age and overexposure to the sun and outside elements.

The top non-operative male cosmetic procedures of 2003 were:
Facial Resurfacing - With age and sun exposure we all develop fine lines, sunspots and irregularity to the surface of the skin. Depending on the amount of skin damage a variety of techniques are available to improve the appearance of the skin.

Laser resurfacing, chemical peels, and Dermal Infusion are all performed as office procedures designed to allow you to return to work. The improvement achieved can be maintained at home using products prescribed specifically for your skin type.
Laser Hair Removal - Tired of dealing with hair on the back of your neck or other body areas? This hair can be eliminated with laser therapy.

Finally, while not ranked with the top male cosmetic procedures, Laser Tattoo Removal is becoming increasingly popular for men who feel they have outgrown and now regret the tattoo they got during a former period in their life.

MAGGIE SAYS:
This letter from one recent patient shows why Maggie is so happy to recommend DRs. DAVIS AND MACPHEE. “Dear Dr. Davis and Dr. MacPhee, I wanted to thank you both for the time you took this week during my appointment. So often a patient can feel rushed, which I personally have experienced with other doctors. It.s a terrible feeling, as cosmetic surgery is a sensitive issue. Thank you again for taking the time to listen and understand.”
