Mitzi Perdue Serves as “Honorary
Chairperson” for 5th Annual Light the Night™ Walk Mitzi Perdue, who was recently named “Mother of the Year”
by the Maryland Association of American Mothers, has volunteered to
serve as the honorary chairperson for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s
Light the Night™ Walk in Ocean City. This year’s Fifth Annual
Walk will take place at Northside Park, 125th Street, on Friday, September
12, 2003 at 6:00 p.m. “Light the Night” is the Society’s
nationwide evening walk to commemorate lives touched by cancer. Participants
carry flickering red and white balloons along a two to three mile walk
within their communities, creating a breathtaking sight and spirit of
fellowship among all who carry them. Cancer survivors hold white balloons
and all other participants carry red balloons. Mrs. Perdue is well known
in the community as an artist, lecturer, writer and philanthropist.
Her most recent brainchild, Healthy U of Delmarva, was initiated in
response to the high rates of cancer, heart disease and diabetes here
on the Shore. Although the walk is not until September, now is the time
for organizations to start planning for their involvement by recruiting
their employees, members and associates. Funds raised through individual
and corporate contributions will support The Leukemia & Lymphoma
Society’s mission to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s
disease and myeloma, as well as to improve the quality of life for patients
and their families. Individual walkers are welcome, and families, companies,
and groups are invited to form teams to walk in this evening event.
There is no registration fee, but those raising $25.00 or more will
carry one of the Society’s illuminated balloons and receive a
free meal. In addition, dedication banners will be displayed to give
everyone an opportunity to place a name or message in honor of or in
memory of a family member or friend with cancer. Participants will also
be awarded a variety of prizes based on their total fundraising efforts.
