Helping You Be You
By Robert J. Davis, M.D.

"Helping You Be You" is a theme created by my associate, Dr. Keelee MacPhee, and it is a theme that fits well with October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month. While the diagnosis of any form of cancer is unexpected, the diagnosis of breast cancer brings with it the anxiety associated with the many choices of treatment options. As plastic surgeons, what we can offer is hope and the ability to help you retain your feminine form and personal image.

Several years ago the goal of breast reconstruction was to create a replacement mound to fill your bra cup. Today, because of the advances in both cosmetic and reconstructive techniques, the goal is to create breasts that are symmetrical and appropriate for your age, body shape, and image.

Reconstruction of the breast, whether after mastectomy or deformed by lumpectomy, can be accomplished using either an implant (exactly like the implant used for breast enlargement) or your own body tissue - the TRAM flap which uses the skin and fat from under the belly button area to create the breast mound. A nipple is created from either local tissue or tattooed in place.

In order to comply with a woman’s wishes for cosmetically pleasing and symmetrical breasts, the opposite breast is frequently reshaped with the choice of an enlargement, lift, or reduction. The techniques used here are exactly those used for the cosmetic reshaping of the breast.

A frequently asked question, "Is breast reconstruction covered by my insurance plan?" Yes, reconstruction and all associated procedures are covered and mandated by Maryland law.

While the surgical treatment of breast cancer can be devastating to a woman’s self and body image, we are here to be a part of the recovery process. "Helping You Be You" applies not only to woman following breast cancer treatment but also to any woman dissatisfied with the appearance of her breasts.

MAGGIE SAYS:
Here’s a letter from one recent patient which shows why Maggie is so happy to recommend DRS. DAVIS AND MACPHEE: "Dear Dr. Davis and Dr. MacPhee, I wanted to thank you both for the time you took this week during my appointment. So often a patient can feel rushed, which I personally have experienced with other doctors. It’s a terrible feeling as cosmetic surgery is a sensitive issue. Thank you again for taking the time to listen and understand."
